When I first reached out to Ervin, it was not to buy a new sail, but because I needed advice with a top-down furling spinnaker (not from North Sails) and somebody thought Ervin might be willing to help. He agreed to go for a sail with us to assess what was happening, and during that sail he offered advice, tried to troubleshoot the misbehaving furler and he didn't try to sell me any sails. It was his approach of helping us to get the most out of the boat and existing equipment / sails first that sold me. Since then (> 4 years) I haven't bought a sail from anybody other than Ervin. The sails I have bought are living up to, if not exceeding, my expectations in terms of performance and longevity. After 4 years and thousands of miles of day sailing and club racing, the furling high-aspect 3Di jib is still fast (and on the original UV protector). The 3Di main also still looks great after 3 years. The spinnakers are holding up great, and while we incurred a rating penalty for the larger one, the increased performance from being able to power up the boat downwind turned that decision into a net positive. Along the way Ervin has regularly sailed with us, even when not directly coupled with the purchase of a new sail. He has also coached us on the water on how to get the most from our boat and sails and helped us become a highly competitive boat in our fleet. This level of service makes it an easy decision on who to call when it's time for a new sail.
Recently purchased new headsail and mainsail for my Morris 29. The experience from start to finish could not have been better! Tripp, Ervin and John were responsive to all my questions/concerns. The best part was at the end - they went above and beyond to make sure my new sails were installed and ready to go when I arrived for a week long family holiday in the Charleston area. I would like to give a huge shout-out to the team at North Sails in Charleston. From the moment we met, they have been 100% outstanding. Although I did not purchase my sails from this loft (I had been on the opposite coast at the time they were ordered; had I known I would be in Charleston, I would have!), this did not make any difference to the guys in Charleston. They have been completely willing to help me get my new sails dialed in and set up- they have unflinchingly provided attentive, immediate and expert assistance. This is clearly THE premier sailmaker in Charleston.
I tore my mainsail earlier this year and replaced with a 'used' one bought off ebay until I could afford a new replacement. I shopped 5-6 sailmakers and, yes, several were less cost. I had dealt with Ervin, John and Tripp in the past for repairs and knew I could trust them. With ALL the others, I would be required to measure on my own, as well as, install on my own. Ervin jumped in the car and visited me in Beaufort, SC to measure, make recommendations an the Mainsail, and even helped adjust my Jib/ headsail...gave me a delivery date and updated as we proceeded. When the day came to install, Ervin & John came back down with the new replacement, installed, raised her up, made the proper adjustment s, gave me some education on how to get the best from the sail and made me happy with my decision. No, North Sail was not the least expensive, but I know, if I ever need help, The crew at North Sails-Charleston got me covered! Mac s/v SOLyMAR
I have a Beneteau 343 and discovered several issues with my mainsail. Ervin Grove came out the same day I called, helped me remove the sail and took it back to the shop for repair. He was friendly and knowledgeable and carried it out to my car an hour later. Kudos to Erv and North Sails of Charleston!
