I wish we had more time to visit! This is a true treasure! I do wish it spoke more about the Gullah outside of Charleston. As someone of Gullah decent from Florida, it would be nice to see the whole story. The museum is South Carolina heavy, which is good, but that's just part of our story. I do love the audio visuals and it gives the Smithsonian museum a run for its money in that. This is a must see stop!

Visiting the International African American Museum was such an eye-opening experience for me. As I’ve been on this journey to figure out who I am and where I come from, I found answers I didn't expect. First off, wow—the museum is gorgeous! But honestly, the beauty can distract you from the deep history it shares about people of color.
It’s packed with facts and artifacts that tell the stories of the slave trade and the wider African diaspora. I loved how it highlighted the South’s contributions and the resilient spirit of a culture that’s still very much alive. The stories of our ancestors really touched my heart.
My boyfriend, Stephen, learned so much too! The genealogy tools helped me realize I have more Native American ancestry than I thought. I still need to dig deeper on my dad's side to track down my African roots, but finding out about the Native tribes on my mom’s side opened up a whole new path for me to explore at my local library back home in Franklin.
I was super impressed with how much the museum uncovered about our history. I truly recommend visiting, no matter your background. The story of American history is important for everyone to learn, and it’s something we should all carry forward.

This was a Great Experience! I only don't give it 5 stars because in comparison to the Smithsonian one it doesn't measure up. But with that being said it is still an Amazing opportunity to learn about the Low Country and all the rich history surrounding it. Learned a lot and would definitely recommend if in the Charleston area! Also it is fairly priced as well.

A very fine museum with lots of interesting exhibits. The orientation film is particularly fine; other highlights include the explanation of rice culture and the Gullah-Geechee exhibit. Easily reachable on the free shuttle bus, and a great way to spend a couple of hours.

I was incredibly impressed by this museum. It’s small, but dare I say even better curated than the Smithsonian. I loved the multimedia exhibits, the interactive experiences, and the fine art included. It artfully combined history, culture, and connected it all to today’s people. Appreciated the genealogy section, the balconies overlooking the water, and the friendly staff. Fantastic.
