Visiting the International African American Museum was such an eye-opening experience for me. As I’ve been on this journey to figure out who I am and where I come from, I found answers I didn't expect. First off, wow—the museum is gorgeous! But honestly, the beauty can distract you from the deep history it shares about people of color.
It’s packed with facts and artifacts that tell the stories of the slave trade and the wider African diaspora. I loved how it highlighted the South’s contributions and the resilient spirit of a culture that’s still very much alive. The stories of our ancestors really touched my heart.
My boyfriend, Stephen, learned so much too! The genealogy tools helped me realize I have more Native American ancestry than I thought. I still need to dig deeper on my dad's side to track down my African roots, but finding out about the Native tribes on my mom’s side opened up a whole new path for me to explore at my local library back home in Franklin.
I was super impressed with how much the museum uncovered about our history. I truly recommend visiting, no matter your background. The story of American history is important for everyone to learn, and it’s something we should all carry forward.

I enjoyed my visit here with my family! You really could spend the entire day there absorbing all of its rich history. This museum was beautifully done. I will definitely return.

This is an amazing museum. It has some outstanding exhibits and information on the history of the African American community. As a black man you can’t help but feel the pain and suffering of our ancestors but you also feel as you walk through the courage and the hope of a better future.

A stunning and inspiring brand new museum, right off of the historic wharf. There is so much to see in this bright and informative space. Everyone was super welcoming, and admission was reasonably priced. You can also sign up online ahead of time. Small gift shop for great items. You can still smell the drywall it is super new. I can’t wait to come back and visit and see all the awesome exhibits that will come in the future. I loved the video that you watched at the beginning that is centered around Gullah culture in the early people that came to this part of the country. This is African-American history, but this is American history and this museum is for everyone. Truly a must see!

This place is a must see in Charleston SC. I'm from Washington DC where the big national museum is this place is at that same level just smaller. I had a great time. Only thing I would change is more variety and items at the gift shop. They didn't have the shirt I wanted in my size. 🤗
